An exceptional red wine made with grapes grown right here in the Midlands from an amazing site, this special Amber Valley Wines project was made in conjunction with talented young winemaker Jack Abbotts at Three Choirs Vineyard.
The Story
In the late summer of 2023 Jack came to me with information about a grower in the Midlands that was growing super quality Pinot Noir on a very special site that was looking to sell some of his 2023 harvest (it was a bumper year for many). I've been keen to add a red wine to our list of wines and it was a too good an opportunity to miss. In conversation Jack, had told me that he'd always wanted to make a wine with these grapes from this site in a certain way, give them some barrel time and some detailed attention to get the very best out of them. So, I bought a couple of tons of the grapes and said to Jack, "Make that wine you've always wanted to make, I'll back you all the way."
So that's what I did, I gave Jack his head, to use an equestrian phrase and what he's done is magic in a bottle!
The Wine
This wine has undergone a malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, to soften the acidity, build structure and graceful tannins and body, and was finished with the addition of oak chips, to develop gentle vanilla notes. The careful vinification of this wine has created a wine with graceful ageing potential, already expressing earthy undertones, which shows its promise and its future potential as an exceptional Pinot noir précoce wine.
The result is a graceful, beautifully aromatic red expressing morello cherries, notes of red fruit, and even blackberries, a spiciness that both expresses on the nose and as gentle allspice note on the palate. It envelopes you in notes of vanilla and soft graceful tannins. It's as close to perfect as I imagined a local Pinot noir could be.
